![]() Charles Criner - "Where I Came From" September 9, 2010 through March 20, 2011 Texan-born artist Charles Criner and his vivid works of art, "Where I Came From" consisting of paintings and lithographs, reflects Criner’s personal experiences, and embodies feelings of nostalgia and reverence from his upbringing. Throughout the body of his work Criner creates an organic and reflective narrative that takes the viewer into his past, present and lends insight into his ideologies and political views. It can be said that Charles Criner’s work tells a story; one that Criner feels possesses a narrative relating to the “Black and Hispanic” experience and heritage. That being said, Where I Came From tells a story that can be appreciated by anyone who identifies as an American, and embraces it’s history, be it good or bad. Born in Athens, Texas, Charles Criner studied at Southern Texas University. As a student, Criner began working closely along side his professor, mentor, and well respected artist, Dr. John Biggers. Criner’s relationship with Dr. Biggers played a vital role molding Criner into the artist he is today. Dr. Biggers gave Criner the encouragement and validation he needed in understanding the importance of telling his story through his art. “He was like a father to me” Criner humbly states when asked about his relationship with Dr. Biggers, “his work gave me inspiration.” Criner’s works can be found in private collections nationwide and have been exhibited at the Tyler Museum of Art, University of Arkansas, Southern University in Shreveport, Texas Southern University, Longview Museum of Fine Art and Southern University in Baton Rouge. Charles Criner currently operates a studio at the Printing Museum of Houston where he is the artist in residence. Looking forward to producing his art on a larger scale, Criner continues to give back to the community through education tools such as students workbooks (The Print Art of Charles Criner: Free School Tour Exhibit) and teacher guides, all of which are available at the Printing Museum of Houston. In addition, Criner recently began designing posters for the annual Juneteenth celebrations - a Texas holiday marking the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston announcing the end of the Civil War and the end of enslavement of black men, women and children. Each year a new poster is designed and distributed throughout Houston.
